About Telluride Colorado History

Like many small towns in the Rocky Mountains, the Town of Telluride was originally established as a silver and gold mining community.

Founded in 1878, the town grew dramatically with the discovery of gold ore and became one of the richest gold strikes of its time. In fact, it is even rumored that at the time, “more millionaires per-capita lived in the Town of Telluride than in Ney York City”. It wasn’t until the early 1970’s that the first ski resort was introduced and Telluride became a desirable ski destination for the rich and famous.
